SDTC Sponsors Community Forum

By John Moynihan

Swampscott residents came together recently to discuss ways of strengthening a sense of community in a community forum sponsored by the Swampscott Democratic Town Committee (SDTC). Hosted by Senator Tom McGee and Representative Lori Ehrlich, the forum was structured to generate a conversation on the positives of "life in Swampscott" and what citizens can do to improve the quality of life. Senator McGee and Representative Ehrlich thanked everyone for coming to the forum and stressed the importance of citizen involvement in community improvement, civic engagement and political activities. "It's significant to have our legislators present and listening to citizen hopes and dreams', said Clinton Bench, the forum organizer. It reinforces the importance of collaboration between the politician and the citizen in improving the quality of life in our town."

The participants who included SDTC members, Independents, and Republicans formed facilitated discussion groups to consider life in Swampscott. Concerns were prioritized and reported back to the reconvened group. "Many people cited the beauty of the town, its ambiance and proximity to the ocean", stated Reverend Anita Farber Robertson. "Ethnic diversity, good schools and library, and the small town atmosphere where neighbors know each other were also listed as positive characteristics of the town. High taxes, historical problems with planning (vacant town planner position), lack of a town geographical or cultural center, and insufficient civic engagement were noted as areas of concern", she said.

The SDTC will incorporate input from the community forum in its planning and, where applicable, in the Democratic Party platform. "It's also possible that ad-hoc, non-partisan groups will be formed to raise awareness and address particular issues", said Ralph Edwards, SDTC Chair. "We're encouraging the practices of democracy where citizens come together to both celebrate our community and work together to improve it. We welcome the involvement of all Swampscott residents."
